There are several uses and effects for magnesium salts.  Normal nerve conduction, muscular contraction, and enzyme activity all depend on magnesium.  Renal crystalluria is prevented by magnesium ions.  Urine becomes alkaline due to the citrate ions, which allows urates to breakdown and be readily removed.  Additionally, citrate ions prevent the production of calcium oxalate by chelating calcium ions.  As a result, magnesium citrate might be recommended to stop calcium oxalate kidney stones from happening again.  Osmotic laxatives include magnesium citrate.
